Holland, MI —
Doug and Dianne Fikse hope to turn Holland people into soup lovers.
The Holland Township couple didn’t consider themselves soup people until the first time they went to a Zoup! restaurant.
And now the Fikses have opened their own Zoup! franchise at 3434 West Shore Drive, across from Target.
“You have to try our soup,” Doug said, noting the restaurant’s 100 soup recipes ranging from Twice-Baked Potato to Spicy Italian Vegetable. “You can come here and get a different soup every day for a month.”
“I haven’t even had them all yet,” Diane added.
And if that’s not enough variety for you, Doug says some of the soups even taste great mixed together. His favorite soup combo is Macaroni and Cheese and Sicilian Pizza.
“That’s a real good mix,” he said.
The only two soups that don’t rotate off the menu are the franchise’s top sellers, Chicken Pot Pie and Lobster Bisque.
Zoup! also has salads and sandwiches, as well as a catering menu. The Web site — www.zoup.com — lists the 12 daily soups and allows customers to order and pay before they pick up food.
When summer arrives, Zoup! will unveil chilled soups like Gazpacho and Tomato Bisque.
The restaurant also caters to specific diets, with soups marked as vegetarian, low fat, gluten free and dairy free.
The couple began searching for a restaurant after realizing Doug’s sales job in the construction industry may not outlast the poor economy.
They decided on a Zoup! franchise, which has 25 restaurants and is based in the Detroit area, because the company seemed to have the same priorities: quality, fast food, cleanliness and friendly service.
As a locally owned and operated business, the Fikses will be at the restaurant to make sure the service is top notch.
Although Zoup! opened Tuesday, the grand opening celebration is planned for 11 a.m. April 16 to provide ample time to train employees.
“The food is great, but the service is going to make the difference,” Dianne said.
